COP25 - Subnational workshops "Advancing towards Carbon Neutrality"

EcoEd was in charge of organizing and carrying out the subnational workshops "Advancing towards Carbon Neutrality" for COP25.

This activity was performed as part of the contribution provided by the European Union (UN), through its EUROCLIMA+ program, to Chile in its role as President of the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to promote climate action both in Chile and in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Opening Event for Subnational Workshops

The 10th of August 2021 from 10:30 to 12:00 hrs, the opening event for the Subnational Workshops "Advancing towards Carbon Neutrality" took place, these were meant to be meeting instances for the public, private and community sectors where they would learn how to contribute to the carbon neutrality goal by 2050 from each region of Chile.

The event had in attendance the Minister of Environment and President of COP25, Carolina Schmidt; the COP25´s High-level Champion, Gonzalo Muñoz; together with representatives of the UN and UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and leaders from multiple sectors, who shared their views on the challenges and opportunities of each sector in the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Subnational workshops "Advancing towards Carbon Neutrality"

These workshops had the objective of presenting concepts, challenges and opportunities that each region had to reach the Carbon-Neutral goal to 2050, along with imparting technical skills regarding carbon management for the public as well as the local government.

The workshops took place between August and September 2021, there were two sessions for each region of Chile (see map).

In the morning, people from the local government, private sector and communities were invited to learn about the basic concepts about carbon management, as well as solutions to manage and reduce the carbon footprint of the region and their own.

The afternoon session shared the challenges and goals of Chile in regard to the management of GHG emissions for the local governments, strengthening the skills of the personnel of local governments and private businesses to manage their GHG emissions and encouraging the implementation of mitigation projects in the regions.

These workshops were executed as part of the contribution provided by the European Union (UN), through its EUROCLIMA+ program and the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), to Chile in its role as President of the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to promote climate action both in Chile and in Latin America and the Caribbean.
