Life Cycle Assessment of Organikus Juice

Organic blueberry juice is known for its beneficial properties, such as its high content of antioxidants that helps prevent heart disease and diabetes, among others. In addition to being made from organically certified agricultural practices that ensure that the product does not contain additives, preservatives, added sugars or sweeteners.
However, it's important to get to know the environmental impacts of the product's life cycle in order to identify opportunities for mitigation, such as providing a more sustainable product to the consumers.
Thus, an assessment of the environmental impacts of the life cycle of 330 ml of Organikus' organic blueberry juice was carried out for eight impact categories, to identify the points of greatest environmental impact in the production, provide information for public knowledge of the environmental profile and identify possible improvements in its processes.

The analysis comply with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 norms together with the guidelines of Product Category Rules PCR CPC 213, 214 for prepared fruit and vegetable products, which make the findings of the study be more reliable and comparable with other environmental profiles.
The study was conducted based on a functional unit defined as 330 ml of organic blueberry juice, density 1.06g/ml produced at the Organikus factory in La Araucanía, Chile, bottled, packaged and marketed, and a cradle-to-grave scope that includes agricultural processes, production of consumables, transportation of fruit and consumables to the site, juice processing, distribution to clients and end of life, among others.
From the analysis, it can be assessed that the life cycle impacts of 330 ml of blueberry juice stem from the product packaging with about half of the life cycle impacts, which could decrease through the reuptake of the bottles at the points of delivery of the product. The impact of the agricultural activity and few intervention processes to the fruit juice, are a lesser contribution of the manufacturing stage.
